Caring For Our Coast - Coastal Education

Project Coordinator - Aimee Ryman, 1999

The “Caring for our Coast” project was designed to help illustrate the benefits and threats to our coastal ecosystem through a visual and interactive education program delivered to school groups and the general public in Lunenburg County. The project was designed to assist the local community by developing support for the Town of Lunenburg’s efforts to implement a system for sewage treatment.

A marine education centre was established and staffed from January through the end of April 1999. Located at the centre was a marine observation aquarium demonstrating local marine organisms. Other displays illustrating information on marine garbage, water conservation, and sewage treatment were available for viewing as well.

The centre showcased the video “Troubled Waters: A Harbor At Risk”. This video was a very graphic portrayal of the hazards of untreated sewage. It included video footage from Lunenburg Harbor. In this way it demonstrated the differences between a clean and healthy environment versus one which has been heavily polluted. Troubled Waters was distributed to the local schools, as well as Lunenburg Council members and some of the local businesses.
