Ernst Brook Restoration

In 1999, BCAF modified a dam at the lower end of Ernst Brook (also known as the Maggie Maggie River) in Mahone Bay. The dam had been installed in the 1970's to reduce flooding of the Town and was in a state of disrepair. In its current state it was completely blocking fish passage from the harbour to the brook.

Project volunteers reduced the height of the dam and made allowances for fish passage. The project was supported by the NS Salmon Association-Adopt a Stream Program and the NS Power “Waterworks” Program. To protect a dry hydrant used for fire services in Mahone Bay, a deflector was also installed in the brook and the hydrant was lowered by the same amount as the dam (approximately 1 foot).
