Development of a Restoration Plan for the Gold River

The Gold River is located in the Municipality of the District of Chester, Lunenburg County and flows into Mahone Bay. This river once had a healthy population of Atlantic salmon and was a fishing destination for anglers from all over Nova Scotia. In recent years the population of salmon has diminished to the point of the river being completely closed to salmon angling. There are many theories as to why the numbers have dropped; acid rain, reduced spawning areas, and low marine survival to name a few.

The Donner Canadian Foundation has partnered with the Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) and the Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation (BCAF) to develop a restoration plan for the Gold River system. The objective of the plan will be to restore the health of the river and bring back a stable population of Atlantic salmon. The first part of this project is to gather all preliminary data and information necessary to draft a restoration plan for the purposes of enhancing the ability of the Gold River to support salmonid populations. As a secondary objective, BCAF is seeking to aid in the re-organization of a local volunteer river / angling group within the community. This group will act as community leaders in the restoration and stewardship of the Gold River.

If anyone would like to volunteer their time or help out with this project please contact BCAF (902) 624-9888 or email info@coastalaction.org
