Shale Pit Restoration
Project Coordinator: Mark McLean
This project demonstrates the use of waste drywall materials in building wetlands to restore an acid drainage shale pit. Using this methodology, BCAF is helping to restore two pits near Martins Brook, where the pH levels are being raised and the levels of heavy metals are being lowered. Establishing wetland plants and grasses on covered shale material reduces pollutants and provides wildlife habitat.
Our partners in this project are the local land owners, Halifax C&D Recycling, Lunenburg Recycling and Composting Facility, Nova Scotia Department of Transportation, and South Shore Ready Mix.
