SHERBROOKE & FOX POINT LAKEs

sherbrooke lake

After a proposal for a public access site at Sherbrooke Lake, concerns were raised regarding how public access and increased recreational usage may affect the lake’s water quality. The Sherbrooke Lake Water Quality Monitoring Program was created in 2017, in collaboration with the Municipality of Chester and the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, to create a water quality baseline and monitor changes in the lake as the public access site is developed.
  • The Sherbrooke Lake Stewardship Committee contains representatives from both municipalities, residents from around the lake, a water quality specialist, and Coastal Action's Watershed and Water Quality Team Lead.
  • 2018 was the first full year for sampling within the lake.
  • Field work is conducted by trained volunteers from around the lake.
  • The program monitors both the lake itself and inlet streams flowing into the lake.

On the Aspotogan Peninsula in the Municipality of Chester, Fox Point Lake’s water quality became a concern to citizens when high sedimentation was noticed, coinciding with a large development – Aspotogan Ridge. Contracted by the Municipality of Chester, Coastal Action manages the Fox Point Lake Water Quality Monitoring Program to measure and track changes in the lake’s water quality.
  • The first water samples at Fox Point Lake were collected in 2015.
  • The program consists of monthly monitoring at four locations – within the lake, two inlet streams, and the outlet stream.
  • The program’s field work is conducted by a group of trained volunteers.
