LIVING SHORELINE

Construction of the living shoreline has been completed! We are now moving into our monitoring stage. Thanks to the help of volunteers and community members, there are 1250 plants within the vegetated bank and tidal marsh of the living shoreline. Research will continue to be conducted to measure the impacts of this natural infrastructure, the results of which will be compiled into a report in 2023.

It is crucial that the plants, vegetated bank, and tidal marsh are not disturbed, especially while they are still establishing their root systems. We ask that visitors to the site respect the work that has been done and stay off of the natural infrastructure as the plants are particularly sensitive right now.
Coastal Action is collaborating with CBCL Limited, TransCoastal Adaptations: Centre for Nature-based Solutions, CBWES Inc, Saint Mary’s University and the Town of Mahone Bay to pilot a living shoreline project throughout the next two years in the Mahone Bay Harbour to help protect a 60-m stretch of Mahone Bay's shoreline from flooding and erosion. This project builds on the conceptual designs produced by CBCL in 2016 in the Flood Prevention and Shoreline Enhancement Plan and includes the installation of rock sills, a tidal wetland, and a vegetated bank. These three components will work collaboratively to reduce wave energy and storm surge, filter stormwater runoff, and stabilize the shoreline.
