Supporting food security and healthy living in mahone bay
We're building a new community garden that will support our local community and we need your help! Did you know that Nova Scotia has the highest rates of food insecurity in all the provinces (Statistics Canada, 2024)? In Nova Scotia, one out of every six households are food insecure (Feed Nova Scotia, 2020) and almost one in four children live in poverty.
Our home base, the Mahone Bay Centre, has generously donated a small plot of land adjacent to the building. You can help us transform this space into a vibrant, inclusive, and accessible community garden that will grow healthy produce for our community.

Our garden will...
- Tackle food insecurity by donating 100% of the fresh fruit and vegetables we grow.
- Create an inclusive space that welcomes community volunteers of all ages and abilities.
- Expand to include several accessibility features including a wheelchair-accessible garden bed, a sensory bed, and a Mi'kmaw medicinal plant bed.
- Provide an outdoor classroom for local youth and community members.

Topics:
Meet us in the Hennigar Room at the Mahone Bay Centre! Come in the main door of the Mahone Bay Centre, turn right, and go up a few stairs (or use the chair lift). Look for our event poster! We will spend the first part of each session inside, then head outside for activities in the garden or woods. There is a small step to enter the garden and pea gravel pathways. The forest trail is well established and relatively flat, with small changes in elevation and roots/rocks making it uneven.

The Mahone Bay Centre Society is extremely excited to collaborate with Coastal Action on the improvement and expansion of the Community Garden. It has long been a space for people who didn’t have a spot to grow things. With Coastal Action at the helm, will become a space not only for locals to use, but a place to grow fruits and vegetables for our local food bank. The Mahone Bay Centre is supporting Coastal Action in this endeavour by providing plot land and purchasing seeds and seedlings. This joint effort will continue to improve the Mahone Bay Centre grounds for all users of the Mahone Bay Centre, as well as strengthen our relationship and the community's relationship with Coastal Action. - Kelly Bent, Office Manager, Mahone Bay Centre
