lunenburg harbour water quality monitoring program

In 2018, Coastal Action was contracted by the Town of Lunenburg to monitor water quality in Lunenburg Harbour, due to growing public concerns regarding the harbour’s water health. The project entails:
  • Weekly monitoring of fecal bacteria at 3 waterfront sites from June to September 2018.
  • Seasonal and rainfall-dependent monitoring of fecal bacteria and nutrients at 5 harbour sites between May and October 2018.
  • Fecal enterococci bacteria were measured during the program, as enterococci is Health Canada’s recommended indicator bacteria for marine environments.
  • Results were compared to Health Canada's enterococci guideline of 175 CFU/100 mL in marine waters for all secondary contact recreation (boating, fishing, etc.).
